***This event is open to UCU members as well as non-members***
What is your experience of racial inequality at the University of Bristol? What is your experience of UoB’s efforts to advance racial equality for staff? What role can UCU Bristol play in the realisation of an environment which is more equitable for all UoB staff regardless of race? To explore these issues in detail UCU (Bristol) is inviting you to a discussion forum where you will have the chance to share your views openly alongside other colleagues. This discussion will form the basis of the branch’s future work relating to addressing racial inequality at UoB. It will also be a great opportunity to interact informally with a number of your Branch Officers. Light refreshments will be provided.

Date: Thursday 23rd January 2025
Time: 10:00 am -11:30 am

3. Event: South West Region Anti-Casualisation & Equalities in Education, 01.02.25, 10:00-14:00
Mild West Room, Hamilton House, 80 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY, Bristol.
Precarity remains endemic in our universities, colleges, and schools. While rents and cost of living continues to soar, working conditions for many remain precarious, affecting us all, but especially affecting those without permanent contracts and the long-term stability this brings. To learn more about precarity and casualisation in education, to share your own personal experiences, to discuss how we might fight back, and to meet with fellow activists, campaigners, and supporters, please join us at Hamilton House on Saturday 1st Feb from 10am. Featuring through the day will be speeches, a panel discussion, and workshops on equalities and precarity, the lives of the casualised employee, and knowing your workplace rights. Panellists, and workshop leads, from UCU and other education unions, with experience of HE, FE, and other sectors. Tea and coffee provided. Registration from 9:30am. Travel expenses for UCU members to be reimbursed. For further details and to ensure your place, please sign up via Eventbrite [LINK].
4. Industrial Action Ballot, February 2025
Last November a motion to ballot UCU members on whether or not they are willing to take industrial action in in furtherance of a 5.5% pay rise was passed by Higher Education Committee [LINK]. We do not yet have precise dates for the start and end of this ballot, but it is due to open in February. Now is a good time to check that your postal address is up to date by logging in to MyUCU.
